Select Shopping | Cushion the cost of a new sofa

Really what you want is a new sofa, but then it turns out a new sofa is too pricey, so you settle for the next best thing: new cushions. But that’s easier said than done! A lot of designers have worked out that this is where many people settle down, so if anything, there are too many cushions to choose from. So to save some time, here are four shops that have a very wide selection of good quality cushions.

Hay
Hay is in vogue at the moment – and for a good reason. Though they are a bit pricey – about 500-700kr – the quality is good and the design is classical but not boring. That is, it isn’t a psychedelic flower inferno, but more one or two colours with the odd twist, like a different coloured dot in the middle – the Hay dot signature, so to speak.

Pilestræde 29-31, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat 10:00-17:00; www.hay.dk

By Nord
The By Nord webshop is known for its animal and landscape prints. So if you fancy decorating your sofa with a glaring owl, a good mix of sheep and wolves or a peaceful looking grove, this is your chance. Again, By Nord is not inexpensive. The prices range from 600-800kr, but the cushions are fairly big, 60 x 60 cm, so you might possibly only need a few. Also they have the added bonus of being washable.

The Rug Company
This is where you at first glance decide you should have gone with the sofa after all. Their collection of cushions is huge – but once you get started it is good fun to roam around deciding whether you want a ‘Heathcliff’ cushion, which has been entirely handmade using traditional tapestry and needlepoint techniques, or an Alexander McQueen-designed black skull cushion in wool. The prices, though, encourage you to reconsider the sofa – they range from about 3,500-4,500kr.

Store Kongensgade 67, Cph K; open Tue-Fri 11:00-17:30, Sat 11:00-15:00, Sun-Mon closed; www.therugcompany.com

Skipper Stoffer
Just because you can’t sew to save your life doesn’t mean you should avoid Skipper Stoffer. If you know someone who does sew, Skipper Stoffer offers a wide selection of beautiful Liberty of London fabrics – so you may have your very own Liberty of London cushion. Prices start at 149kr.

Gl Mønt 19, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:30-17:30, Fri 10:30-18:00, Sat 10:30-14:00; www.skipperstoffer.dk
