Select Shopping | Forget the black dress, we want trousers

The little black dress, the sexy black mini-skirt – both get lots of attention … and plenty of recommendations as to where to find the most fitting, fashionable and inexpensive, and the least hard work to wear.

But what about the black trousers? They are always recommended to go with the cute top, the sexy shirt or the Sarah Lund jumper. But advice as to where to find them is few and far between. So here are some pointers as to where to find this very basic but very useful clothing item.

H&M
H&M are always good for a pair of inexpensive and somehow always fitting pair of black trousers. The ones they carry every season are called super-skinny, super-low jeans and only 179kr for a pair. They tend to carry them every season, and given that they always fit, you can avoid queuing for their always crowded and often rather filthy dressing rooms.

Amagertorv 231, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 11:00-16:00; 179kr a pair

Max Mara
This is mostly black trousers of the office wear type. They look really classy and they are ever so comfortable to wear. It is one of the few shops where you are glad to be offered help because they are very good at finding just the right pair. The trousers are always made too long – to be altered to fit you once you have chosen the ones you like.

Max Mara, Østergade 7-9, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00, closed Sun; 1,000kr a pair

Designers Remix
Designers Remix stock statement button jeans, a classic slim-fit pair of trousers that are made of stretch cotton and a zipper on the side of the leg. What makes them stand out from any other pair of black trousers are the designer embossed buttons. They are fairly big, but somehow work for the look. And the stretch in the cotton makes them comfortable to wear even though they are very slim-fit. If you decide you don’t like the black version, Designers Remix has expanded its collection to include blue and a colour they call shady.

Pilestræde 8D, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun closed; 1,000kr a pair

Hugo Boss
These are more of the classical style, but also fit well with all the tops you have persuaded yourself to buy. Boss orange is less expensive and if it is ‘just’ black trousers as well, they are less expensive. They also have a type called Gemini Jeans – 1,300kr but definitely worth it. Then even incredibly unsexy Sarah Lund jumpers are allowed.

Østergade 15, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00, closed Sun; 1,300kr a pair
