Catholics hammer Danish celebrity chef duo

Church is overreacting to a bit of humour, the brothers argue

Adam Price, the creator of the TV series 'Borgen', and his brother and fellow TV chef, James Price, have found themselves on the receiving end of a chastising from the Catholic Church after a recent episode of their TV series ‘Spise med Price’ (eat with Price).

The brothers got in some hot holy water after they used a small statue of the Virgin Mary as a meat hammer as part of their cooking show, which was being filmed in Rome and shown on DR1 last night.

“I think that it insulted many Catholics because the Virgin Mary has a special place in the Catholic Church,” Niels Messerschmidt, the head of information for the Catholic Church in Denmark, told Jyllands-Posten newspaper. “They should have been more sensible, as many people see that as a provocation.”

It was just a joke
But the Price brothers aren’t about to apologise to the church for using a statue of Jesus’s mother to tenderise some meat.

“I think that would take it out of proportion,” Adam Price said.

“I think that the typical viewer will interpret most of the comments as pure humour and not an attempt to disgrace the beliefs of 1.2 billion Catholics. It was never our intention to insult the Catholic Church.”

Price went on to underline that the Roman Catholic Church, like many other religious faiths, has been the butt of humorous treatment far more rash than what he and his brother did.
