The Easter break brought ample warmth, sunshine and a spring in full blossom, but for the many hay fever sufferers in the country it also ushered in the season of itchy eyes, sneezing bouts and blocked noses.
The amount of birch pollen in the Copenhagen air set a new record reaching the dizzying heights of 4,696 particles per cubic metre on Monday.
“That is an extremely high amount of birch pollen,” Henning Gisselø, a meteorologist at the national meteorologist institute, DMI, told Ekstra Bladet tabloid.

No respite
To put things into perspective, the asthma and allergy association, Astma-Allergi Danmark, considers pollen amounts as being high as soon as pollen figures are more than 100.
According to TV2, the previous pollen record was set back on 7 May 2006 when birch pollen figures reached 4,381 in Copenhagen.
There will be no respite for hay fever sufferers in the near future as DMI stated that the staggering pollen numbers will continue over the coming days.
