CPH Sakura Festival

In Copenhagen, spring means birds chirping, flowers popping up through the soil and cherry blossom trees blooming.  
The 7th Annual Copenhagen Sakura Festival celebrates a gift Seiichi Takaki  donated in 2005 of 200 cherry blossom trees to honour the 200th birthday of Hans Christian Andersen.  
The festival began in 2008 and has every year been a great success – weather gods permitting.  Last year, 17,000 people partook in sumo wrestling, a tea ceremony and a Japanese picnic. 
In Japan when the cherry trees blossom, you are supposed to go on a picnic and enjoy the flowers, delicious food and each other’s company. This is a tradition that dates back more than 1,000 years.
And this year the festival in Langelinie Park coincides with two other events at the National Museum and Gladsaxe Library that should have Copenhagen buzzing with Japanese culture over the weekend.  
The Copenhagen Sakura Festival Committee has been working since 2008 with the Japanese Embassy in Denmark to put on the festival.  
You can expect Japanese food, clothing, picnics, tea ceremonies, dance and traditional fighting to be on display at the popular festival.  
Fan favourites like karate, judo and the kimono show will also be back with fun shows that will keep the entire family entertained.
