Billund Airport to get railway connection

The rail link is expected to be ready by 2020 and include stations at Billund Airport and near Legoland

The government has struck a deal with several opposition parties to connect Billund Airport by rail to the existing network.

The link will be funded by the government’s Train Fund DK, a 28.5 billion-kroner oil and infrastructure fund that was approved by the government in September last year.

“Today, we take another step towards realising the Train Fund and securing a better transport system for the Danes,” Magnus Heunicke, the transport minister, said in a press release.

“In future, commuters can look forward to a travel time of just 29 minutes between Vejle and Billund Airport.”

The new single-track railway will be about 19 kilometres, offer top speeds of 120 km/h and connect to the existing Vejle-Herning track at Jelling.

The agreement includes a 16 million kroner VVM study, which will evaluate the impact the railway will have on the environment, and 734 million kroner for the construction of the railway itself.

The railway is expected to be ready by 2020 at the latest and will include stations at Billund Airport and near Legoland.
