New Metro trains aren’t compatible with old system

Ansaldo’s delivery has already exceeded the approved Metro budget of 2.756 billion kroner by 250 million

A new report from the Transport Ministry and operators Metro Company has revealed that the technology on the new Cityring Metro line is so different from the current Metro that the new trains won’t be able to drive on the old tracks, and vice-versa.

Nina Kampmann, the project head of the Metro Company, confirmed to Ingeniøren newspaper that the new Cityring trains would only be able to use the existing Metro line if the advanced equipment is changed. Kampmann argued there was no way to avoid different technology.

“The running systems and the rest of the technologically-advanced equipment naturally stem from different generations of technology,” Kampmann told Ingeniøren.

“The existing Metro was designed in the 1990s and is based on the technology of the time, while the Cityring has been designed in the last five years – 15 years later – and is based on contemporary technology.”

Italians at it again
The Italian train producer Ansaldo STS, which also provided the much-criticised IC4 railway trains, supplied the original Metro trains, upgraded the system a few years later and will deliver the new trains for the Cityring.

Ansaldo’s delivery has already exceeded the approved Metro budget of 2.756 billion kroner by spending three billion kroner.
