Police accused of keeping cash after fining tourists

Two officers wrote out speeding tickets to foreigners and kept the money for themselves
Two police officers have been detained and face charges relating to five cases in which they allegedly handed out speeding tickets to tourists and afterwards kept the cash, according to accusations by the independent police complaints authority, DPU.
"We have five cases in total relating to the two police officers," the DPU's head consultant Kristian Palmann Jensen told DR. "Two for one of them, and three for the other one."
Police take cash
Current legislation allows cops to demand cash payments when tourists violate traffic laws, but in this case the money simply vanished and may have ended up in the officers’ own pockets.
"It's very unusual and that's why we immediately decided to arrest them," Jensen said.
Shocking and unDanish
Claus Oxfeldt, the head of the national police association Politiforbundet, was shocked by the accusations and hopes they are stand-alone cases.
"If they really put money in their own pockets, then that is absolutely shocking, unDanish and wrong, and the consequence should obviously be that they can no longer stay in the force," he told DR.
