September 19: For better, for worse

Their Greek fairy-tale ended when the military junta took over Athens

On this day in 1964, the 18-year-old princess Anne-Marie of Denmark married the 23-year-old King Constantine II of Greece.

But the Greek fairy-tale ended in 1967 when the couple were forced to flee Greece after a failed coup attempt against the military junta that was effectively ruling in Athens at the time.

Constantine II remained the Greek head of state in exile until 1 June 1973 – the date the junta abolished the monarchy.
