Denmark aims to transfer responsibility and reduce dependence on aid

The government has unveiled a new strategy for Denmark's input in Afghanistan from 2015 to 2017.

The new strategy covers Denmark's political, military and civilian contributions to the country and – according to a joint statement from the Foreign Ministry, the Defence Ministry and the Trade and Development Ministry – represents a transfer of responsibility for Afghanistan's security and development into its own hands.

Contributing to transition
"The new strategy is a natural contribution in Afghanistan's transition," the foreign minister, Martin Lidegaard, said in a press release.

The defence minister, Nicolai Wammen, outlined the military input as consisting of about 160 soldiers going into 2015 and helicopter transport use in the northern part of the country. "In this way Denmark makes a solid contribution to the continued efforts," he said.

Mogens Jensen, the trade and development minister, stated that Denmark would continue to concentrate on education, proper government, growth and employment.

“The goal is of course to make Afghanistan less dependent on international aid,” he explained.
