Happy days on the green baize

Everyone welcome at pool pub reopening: Free beer and the chance to take on the champ

November tends to be the month in which everything dies in Denmark. Granted, your balcony plants will do well to survive, but it’s a mystery why so many sports wrap things up when it’s still mild outside.

By December, even the Superliga has followed suit – for three whole months. Talk about a black hole of things to do.

But for one club in Nordvest, the year is only just beginning. And this time around, November marks not only the start of their season, but a complete rebirth.

The new owners of Pool Pub, which is just up the road from the mosque, have discovered that the biggest challenge they face trying to revitalise their spacious pool and snooker hall is letting people know it exists.

“People can’t believe the place is so big and that it has existed for over 20 years,” says Nikolai Saxil Jørgensen, who is understandably keen to get the word out that Pool Pub is a great place for fans of billiard sports to gather.

On November 1, following extensive renovation work including the laying down of new carpets, everyone is welcome to come and join two legends of Danish pool, former national champs Jan Pedersen and Nick Conradi. From 3pm, Pedersen will be taking on all-comers, and then at 4pm, the pair will play an exhibition match at 4pm.

With free beer at the bar for one hour from 5pm courtesy of sponsor Carlsberg, and barbecued food, live music and spot prizes all day, it promises to be quite a night.

So why not come along and share Copenhagen’s best kept secret with your friends.
