January 24: First female bishop

A Rebel with a cause, it transpired

On this day 20 years ago in 1995, Lise-Lotte Rebel became the first female bishop in Denmark after she was elected to the position in the diocese of Helsingør – a position she still holds today.

Rebel, 64 (her birthday was on January 23), was awarded the Order of Dannebrog in 1996 and became a knight of the order first class in 2001. In January 2014, she became a commander of the
order.

After graduating from the University of Copenhagen in 1978, Rebel served as a priest at Helsingør Cathedral from 1987 until her appointment as bishop.
