Caroline Wozniacki finished off her Czech opponent Denisa Allertova in straight sets at Wimbledon today, beating her 6-1, 7-6.

Although the world number 83 put up a fight, she could not stop the Dane sealing her passage with a 8-6 win in the second set tie-break.

Moving forward in spite of injuries
Wozniacki now faces Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the third round on Saturday.

The 23-year-old sent Wozniacki packing from the 2013 US Open and has a 2-1 superiority over the Dane.

However, perhaps significantly, the Dane’s sole victory against Giorgi came in their only meeting on grass in the quarter-finals of the 2014 AEGON Eastbourne International.

German nemesis ahead
Following her win that year, Wozniacki went on to lose in the next round to Angelique Kerber, her likely opponent in the last 16 should she dispatch Giorgi.

Kerber, who has a 6-4 head-to-head record against the Dane and has won six of their last eight meetings, is the fourth favourite to win Wimbledon following her victory in the AEGON Classic in Birmingham on June 21.

Nevertheless, Wozniacki’s half of the draw is the easiest by far, although she remains a 40/1 outsider to win the title.
