Mathematician scoops top award

The University of Copenhagen has awarded mathematician Anders Ronn-Nielsen the Årets Harald, an annual prize given to their teacher of the year.

The assistant professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, who teaches probability theory, was chosen from the university’s 5,000 teachers for his ability to inspire and engage students during his lectures. He was nominated by 32 students.

“He finds intuitive, everyday examples to introduce vague theoretical concepts,” said one of his students, Anne Petersen. “It may sound trite but it is an art to be able to come up with useful everyday examples that can explain theoretical
mathematics.”

Besides the honour, Ronn-Nielsen also received a check for 25,000 kroner and a porcelain statue of an owl, which symbolises wisdom.
