New sports channel on the way

TV2 Film to be scrapped as executives promise a wide range of sports including rugby

TV2 will launch a new sports channel at the start of next year.

“A new sports channel will strengthen our brand and will be a key player in Danish TV sports offerings," TV2 chief executive Merete Eldrup wrote on the station's website.

“We believe there is a place in the TV market for a sports channel that focuses on Denmark," said Eldrup.

Films out, sports in
The new channel will replace TV2 Film, which the station said can no longer compete with the large film catalogues offered by various on-demand services.

While major sporting events will continue to be shown on TV2's main channel, Eldrup said the new channel should be viewed as an additional offer.

More than live sports
Content offered on the new channel will include Danish handball, rugby finals, football, the Olympics, Danish ice hockey and cycling.

“In addition to a large amount of live sports, which is the core of any sports channel, we will offer original sports magazines and take advantage of the massive muscle that TV2 already wields in sports,” TV2 sports director Frederick Lauesen said on the station’s website.
