Foreign criminals being deported like never before

Over 1,800 deported last year

Since 2011, the number of foreign criminals deported from Denmark has shot up by 77.5 percent, according to figures from the Justice Ministry.

In 2013, over 1,800 foreigners convicted of a crime in Denmark were deported – up considerably from the 1,019 deported in 2011.

"We've focused heavily on sending home the people who have been convicted of a crime," Trine Bramsen, the judicial spokesperson for Socialdemokraterne, told Metroxpress newspaper. "Convicted foreigners do not belong in Denmark."

Agreements in place
Bramsen said the government has established agreements with a number of other countries concerning the deportation of the criminals to their home nations.

The number of administrative deportations – involving people who are in Denmark illegally – also increased from 977 in 2011 to 1,183 in 2013.

Additionally in 2013, 431 foreigners banned from staying in Denmark were arrested in Denmark – up from 221 in 2009.
