An unusually long heat wave could make for a record breaking month

With just a few days left in the month, July’s average temperature of 19.4 degrees is getting close to the record of 19.8 degrees set in 2006, and is well above the 17.4 degrees average for July from 2001 to 2010.

DMI senior climatologist John Cappelen told DR Nyheder that he expects this July to exceed the second-place record of 19.5 degrees set in 1994.

The nationwide heatwave that hit Denmark on 17 July is continuing in 99 percent of the country. The highest temperatures nationwide have been over 30 degrees.

For a heatwave to hang on for so long in Denmark is quite unusual. This year's heat record so far was set on July 23 in northern Jutland when the temperature reached 31.3 degrees.
