Farewell Abigail’s

The city centre expat food supplier has closed up shop to concentrate on home deliveries

Abigail's, the city centre shop that has for decades been supplying expats with the foodstuffs from their home countries they cannot live without, closed down earlier this month.

However, the business, which mainly catered to Brits, South Africans and Americans living in Denmark, will continue to offer a home delivery service.

A statement on its website confirmed that the shop at Peder Hvitfeldts Stræde 17 had been “idle for a couple of months” due to a “death in the family” that has “on a working and financial level had a very big effect”.

At the end of July, the shop briefly reopened for a closing down sale, and it has since confirmed it will operate home and postal deliveries.

As Danish shops have increasingly begun to stock international products over the last decade, it was no secret that Abigail's was struggling for customers.

In early 2011, it had to withdraw its most popular product, Marmite, after a reminder from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration that the sale of products fortified with added vitamins is forbidden.

The shop’s ‘Bring back Marmite’ campaign failed to overturn the ban, and there was talk about double standards as neighbouring shops continued to sell similarly ‘illegal’ products without any intervention from the authorities.
