Denmark to host 2019 World Cross Country Championships

Aarhus will also organise races for thousands of school kids

Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus, has been chosen to host the 2019 World Cross Country Championships.

No other candidates submitted a formal bid before the official deadline on October 15.

Denmark will build on positive experiences from hosting the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships, which were held in Copenhagen.

Elite races with kids tournament
“I am delighted that Denmark will again be hosting an IAAF World Athletics Series event,” stated Sebastian Coe, the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations.

“In 2014, they delivered a wonderful World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen that successfully married the elite world title races with a mass run.”

The head of the Danish Athletics Federation, Jakob Larsen, has confirmed that the races in Aarhus will be combined with events open to the public, but this time the focus will be given to school kids from all over the country.

“As a sport running is hugely popular in Denmark, but we are far from finished with the potential for creating inspiring and engaging activities in our sport,” Larsen said.

“The world cup will be for runners of all shapes and sizes – and there will be races of many forms.”

Denmark’s best achievement at a WC Cross was secured in 1984 by Niels Kim Hjorth, who finished 14th.
