Orange surprise – Denmark 1, Netherlands 0

Denmark defeat favoured Netherlands in their opening Euro 2012 match

A first half goal by Michael Krohn-Dehli turned out to be the edge Denmark needed in its opening of the Euro 2012 against the Netherlands in Kharkhiv.

Despite Denmark's 1-0 victory it was the Netherlands that had the more effective attack, forcing Denmark on the defensive for much of the match. In what was nearly the equaliser,  Danish goalie Stephan Andersen misjudged a first half Arjen Robben shot on goal that struck the post.

The win is the first time Denmark has won its opening match in a European championship. Playing in what has been dubbed 'the Group of Death' given the strengh of the other teams Denmark had been seen as the weakest side in a group that also includes Germany and Portugal.

Denmark's next match is against Portugal on Wednesday.
