Coming at cinemas soon

In both sex and film, normally the climax comes last, but not in Lars von Trier’s ‘Nymphomaniac’

“Look at me when you come,” might sound like a bunny boiler alert, but in the case of the cast of Lars von Trier’s ‘Nymphomaniac Volume 1’, it was the direction given to them for a new promo poster ahead of its worldwide premiere in Denmark on December 25.

The poster features 14 of the film’s actors having an orgasm, although one of them, Shia LaBeouf, does appear to be smoking a post-coital cigarette, so it’s unclear whether he’s coming or going.

Connie Nielsen, orgasm or just looking at Lars Ulrich?

Other highlights include Stellan Skarsgård, naked from the waist up, looking like a man who has just remembered he left the oven on; Sophie Kennedy Clark, who looks like she is crooning her climax; Udo Kier, who looks like he has just copulated on the set of ‘Night of the Living Dead’; and Denmark’s very own Nicolas Bro, who at the best of times looks like a trout, but in this case the corpse of one.

It’s also not a good look for Jamie Bell – what would Snowy say? – and Uma Thurman, a still that could easily have been lifted from the scene in ‘Kill Bill’ in which she is raped whilst in a coma.

At the other end of the spectrum, the experienced von Trier regulars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe really pull it off, although it’s to be expected as being shot shooting your load is just part of the course of working with the Danish auteur.

The poster also includes stills of Christian Slater, Stacy Martin, Mia Goth, Connie Nielsen and Jens Albinus.

‘Nymphomaniac’ will be released as two feature-length films, Volumes I and II, in both hard-core and soft-core versions.
