DF supports Crimean vote

Denmark is guilty of double standards if it doesn’t recognise Crimean independence, says Dansk Folkeparti

While the US and the EU are imposing sanctions against Russia and Crimea, the foreign spokesperson for Dansk Folkeparti, Søren Espersen, has said he wants Denmark to recognise Crimean independence.

The government should respect the wish of the majority in Crimea after 96.77 percent of voters on Sunday chose to secede from Ukraine and join Russia.

“That’s everybody,” Espersen told DR Nyheder. “When 96 percent vote ‘yes’ and everything appears to have followed the books, it’s clear that all of Crimea’s population wants to be part of Russia.”

Double standards
Espersen said Denmark is guilty of double standards if it doesn’t recognise the vote, comparing the situation to when Kosovo broke away from Serbia in 2008 and Denmark immediately recognised Kosovo as an independent state.

However, while the foreign spokesperson for government party Socialdemokraterne, John Dyrby Paulsen (S), acknowledged that the majority in Crimea are looking towards Russia, he told DR Nyheder that the election still violated the Ukranian constitution and international law.
