New initiative to improve leisure fishing

Much of the work involved with fisheries management occurs via an impressive network of volunteers from leisure fishing organisations

A new fishing package for 2014 from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries is expected to improve fish populations and allow for better fishing opportunities in the lakes and off the coasts of Denmark.

The 40 million kroner plan includes elements such as an improved fish releasing program and a larger utilisation of knowledge from hobby and leisure fishing enthusiasts.

“Recreational fishing is more than a hobby and it is a huge business for Denmark that must continue to flourish,” Dan Jørgensen, the minister for food, agriculture and fisheries, said in a press release.

“I am therefore very pleased that we can use more of the knowledge that Danish leisure fishermen have.”

Another aspect of the package is a new app and website that will make it possible for leisure fishermen to report their catches in lakes, streams, rivers along the coast and the ocean.

That will provide more knowledge about the fish in Danish waters and lead to an enhanced foundation for future fisheries management.

Much of the work involved with fisheries management occurs via an impressive network of volunteers from organisations that take on the responsibility and work themselves.
