An air bag problem has led to the German car manufacturer BMW recalling one of its most popular models, including thousands sold in Denmark.

BMW has worldwide recalled 1.6 million of its 3-series cars from the model year 2000 to 2006 to fix the air bag systems made by Takata Corp, after it was reported that the bags may rupture and cause shards to fly out and injure the person sitting in the front passenger seat.

No accidents yet
Mette Lolholm, a spokesperson for BMW Denmark, told DR that around 5,000 Danish owners will be contacted by their local car dealer and offered a free check-up.

"We haven't had an accident, but we are recalling the cars as a precautionary measure. Some of our competitors have had problems with these airbags that didn't open properly," she said. 

The problem has also been responsible for millions of cars being recalled by Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota.
