Visitors go wild for wild bison on Bornholm

Rare beasts a tourist sensation

Over 80,000 tourists visited Almindingen Forest on Bornholm this summer to see 13 wild bison that now live there

“People came from everywhere to see the rare European bison that roam freely around the terrain,” Søren Friese from Naturstyrelsen, the nature agency, told TV2 News.

The bison drew an especially large number of visitors in July and August – some days as many as 1,000 tourists visited the forest.

Not so wild
“The biggest challenge is to prevent the animals becoming accustomed to humans. They should definitely remain wild animals,” said Friese.

The animals find hiding places in the dark pine forest where they can get away from the tourists. Naturstyrelsen advises visitors to stay on marked trails and roads and not to follow the bison into the forest.

This summer's attendance of 80,000 was measured from June 1 to August 20.
