September 19: Police are arrested

Nazis decommission Danish police

On this day 70 years ago, the Nazi occupiers in Denmark decommissioned the Danish police, arrested 1,967 police officers and moved them to concentration camps in Germany.

The Danish foreign minister at the time, Nils Svenningsen, then negotiated the release transport of 200 ill policemen back to Denmark in December 1944.

Upwards of 90 died during their incarceration in Germany and several more succumbed to injuries afterwards.
