Queen Margrethe is celebrating her 75th birthday today and the good common people of Denmark will, as is tradition, have a chance to spot her waving from balconies at Amalienborg Palace and City Hall in Copenhagen.
At 12 o’clock, after the changing of the guards ceremony, the queen and the Royal Family will greet the crowds from the balcony of Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg.
From there, the queen will take a carriage ride to City Hall, where she will attend a lunch reception at 1pm.
The route goes along Store Kongensgade, passes Hotel D’Angleterre at Kongens Nytorv, and continues all the way down the walking street Strøget (where vehicles are not normally permitted) to Rådhuspladsen.
At 2pm, the queen will appear at the City Hall’s balcony to wave to her people once again before returning to Fredensborg Palace.
According to the official statement, Prince Henrik will not attend today’s celebrations. He has got influenza and feels too ill to attend.
The Danish TV channel DR1 is following the queen throughout the day with live coverage of her 75th birthday from 8:15am to 9pm, with a short break for the evening news at 6:30pm.
