Today’s Date: Firebombing of Copenhagen

 

On 2 September 1807, the British Navy led by Admiral James Gambier, and land forces of 18,000 men led by Lord Cathcart, began a three-day bombardment of Copenhagen using phosphorous rockets.

The British feared the Danes would hand over their navy to the French during the Napoleonic Wars.
