This week’s TV: Harry Potter maybe, but who’d be a fan of Draco Malfoy?

Meeting the Superfans
DR3, mon 20:35

Growing up as Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series, Tom Felton is no stranger to superstardom. For more than a decade, he has watched the movie franchise’s fan-base grow and grow.

In this series, Felton meets some of the fans to understand what draws them towards a personality, be it fictional (Draco) or real (Daniel Radcliffe), and what sparks their devotion.

He discovers a super-fan of his who has travelled to every event he has showed up to since he took the role of Draco.

From collecting memorabilia and looking out for every event to dressing up as their favourite character, the doc finds out what it is like to be a super-fan.

With a score of 8.2 on IMDB, this documentary reveals how a fan can become so obsessed they struggle to distinguish between fantasy (Hogwarts) and reality (stacking shelves). (LAB)

One day TV3 will buy a decent show that isn’t a year old (Game of Thrones, Dexter, Boardwalk Empire), which people actually want to see.
Sadly 100 Code (Mon 21:25), State of Affairs (Wed 23:00) and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce (22:00) aren’t that show.

The first, based in Stockholm and New York and starring Michael Nyqvist (Mikael Blomkvist from The Millennium Series), is reported to be a laughable smorgasbord of Swedish clichés. The second stars Katherine Heigl. Enough said. And the third sounds like Girls for 40-somethings. Ditto.

The drama continues with British ‘crime best buried’ miniseries Ice Cream Girls (SVT1, Sun 22:55) and Secrets and Lies (SVT2, Tue 22:45), the original Aussie version of the US series about the fallout following the death of a child … and it’s not too bad.

Elsewhere, Comedy Central is showing the 19th series of classic cartoon series South Park (Thu 22:15) just days after its US transmission; there’s another chance to see Sex Pistols doc The Filth and the Fury (SVT2, Tue 22:45); Breadline Kids (DR2, Mon 19:55) is a harrowing British doc about child poverty; and BBC series Dig World War II excavates old battlegrounds with some fascinating results. Coming Soon:
Quantico

Too obvious ... or could it be a double bluff?
Too obvious … or could it be a double bluff?

With a score of 70 on Metactritic, Gossip Girl creator and producer Joshua Safran has effortlessly demonstrated that a terror cell drama doesn’t need a schizoid lead to succeed.

With one of his trademark squeaky clean casts on board, Quantico, which swaps the CIA HQ of Langley for an FBI academy, is confident and sassy enough to keep its audience on their toes.

The twists come thick and fast from the off as the audience are left to guess who might be the terrorist in their midst, and very probably who might still be a virgin. (AL)

The Dutch, for so long the ‘we’ve qualified before the hosts’ kind of team, could finish fourth in their Euro 2016 group. Fourth! That will hurt more than losing Indonesia. So can they beat Kazakhstan (K6, Sat 17:55) and the Czechs (Tue 20:30) and hope other results go their way? Elsewhere, we’ve got the Russian GP and Rugby World Cup action (see p29). (BH)

Created by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who co-wrote The Descendants,  the likeable, coming-of-age dramedy The Way Way back is the best of this week’s premieres. Sophia Coppola’s The Bling Ring might be deliberately shallow, but it needed more statement, while Gerard Butler is plain ugly in The Ugly Truth (TV2, Sun 21:00) and falls on his arse in Olympus has Fallen.
