On September 29, the Venstre government presented its budget proposal for 2016, ‘Strammere rammer – klare prioriteter’ (’Tighter framework – clear priorities’).
The government is looking to cut about 1.4 billion kroner from the national research budget and to reduce state expenses on higher education by 900 million kroner.
Municipalities, which are responsible for financing public schools, must also save half a billion kroner next year.
Children’s package cancelled
Moreover, the government has decided to call off the 2.5 billion kroner children’s package, which was promised to municipalities by the former government.
Over the next four years, the government aims to save 8.7 billion kroner on education and research.
The opposition and universities worry the significant budget cuts will negatively affect the quality of education and research and harm Denmark’s reputation abroad.
