Lukas Graham breaks UK chart record for longest Danish number one

Move over Aqua and Whigfield and all hail the king!

Copenhagen native Lukas Graham has this week made history in the UK singles charts as the longest reigning Danish act at number one.

The single ‘7 years’ has maintained its peak position for five weeks, swiping the trophy from Aqua and Whigfield, who respectively flew the Dannebrog for a month with bubblegum pop single ‘Barbie Girl’ in 1997 and Eurodance hit ‘Saturday Night’ in 1995.

It is the longest consecutive chart topper since Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk’ spent seven non-consecutive weeks at the singles summit between December 2014 and February 2015.

The homegrown four-piece beat rival Mike Posner to the prime spot by 20,000 combined chart sales and claimed the accolade of the most streamed track of the week with 4.52 million listens.

But the chart battle with Posner still continues stateside as ‘I Took A Pill In Ibiza’ leapt up four places in the US charts to number ten. But like Mama said, it’s okay, as Lucas Graham climbed from nine to number five as well.
