On this day in 1134, King Niels of Denmark died during the civil war in Schleswig after 30-years of unstable ruling, aged 68-69. The accurate birthday of Niels remains unclear. After the death of his brother King Eric Evergood, Niels became the last surviving son of King Sweyn II Estridson to ascend to the throne. King Sweyn II is often considered to be Denmark’s last Viking king.
