Danish government to lower Great Belt Bridge toll

The 25 percent reduction is to be phased in over three years

Over the next three years, the government intends to reduce the toll fee for the Great Belt Bridge by 25 percent.

The move is one of the key parts of the government’s new business and entrepreneurship plan proposal.

“I’m really pleased we will reduce the toll fee for crossing the Great Belt Bridge. It will really make a difference for citizens, companies and the connectivity of the nation,” said the transport and building minister, Ole Birk Olesen.

No more money machine
The finance minister, Kristian Jensen, chimed in as well, contending the Great Belt Bridge connection belongs to the Danes and should allow for movement. It shouldn’t be a money machine for the state.

The toll fee reduction will be phased in over a three-year period, so that the first reduction will take place on 1 January 2018 and the final instalment will occur on 1 January 2021. The connection is expected to be completely paid off by 2031.

The toll fee reduction will impact on road traffic as well as commuter trains.
