Danish Clara Tauson is through to the next round of the Dubai Tennis Championship that’s rated as a WTA 1000 tournament.
Elina Svitolina, who had won the tournament twice, was considered favorite against the promising Dane, but Tauson won in three sets against the strong Ukrainian.
The Dane won with the score 7 – 6, 3 – 6, 7 – 6 after being calm and winning tiebreaks in both first and third sets.
The last set didn’t look like a tiebreak ending, as Tauson was up 5 – 4 and serving to win game, set and match, but the strong Ukrainian broke her Tausons serve.
From the score 5 – 5, Svitolina took the lead of the match, as she won her serve comfortably to the score 6 – 5, for the Ukrainian.
That development didn’t shake Tauson, who quickly equalised to 6 – 6, and the game was to be decided in tiebreak.
After winning the first tiebreak of the match, Tauson was confident in the second tiebreak of the match, and was up 3 – 0, before winning the final tiebreak 7 – 4.
In the round of the last 16, Tauson, currently ranked #38 on the WTA list, will face the 26 year old Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus who is currently ranked #1 in the list.
Tauson aged 22, is currently ranked #38 and not far from her career high, #33 from February 2022.
