Blooming bad news!

Fifteen years on from its foundation, city centre pub to close

Good pubs are hard to find, and in the case of Bloomsday Bar in central Copenhagen, this has always been the case – literally.

Tucked away on Niels Hemmingsensgade, a side-street running parallel to one of the walking streets, many first-time visitors to the city have been directed to the establishment, but searched in vain. However, once located, it is a pub they return to again and again.

It is therefore with great sadness that many of them will learn the news that the pub is officially closing – some regulars claim on May 1, others on May 14.

In the meantime, the pub is officially going to bid a “fond farewell” this Thursday (April 26) when it celebrates its 15th birthday with a party from 7pm. The pub’s Facebook page promises “live music, DJ and of course LOTS OF FREE BEER”.

During its time on the city scene, Bloomsday developed a reputation for being a great place to play pool, having an electric live sports atmosphere, and excellent live Irish music.

Nevertheless, while it’s regularly referred to as an Irish pub, it is probably the closest this city has to a traditional British boozer, and it has always been particularly popular with the English.

According to one source, the premises have been sold to a couple of Swedes who play to open a cocktail bar.
