A four-year-old boy received a fractured skull after falling off a wave simulator at the popular science museum Experimentarium on Tuesday.

The boy fell three meters and landed on the concrete floor behind the attraction, called The Wave, before being rushed to Rigshopsitalet where he was put in an artificial coma while the extent of his injuries were assessed.

Witnesses speaking to tabloid Ekstra Bladet described how the boy was thrown about on the attraction before falling to the floor.

“The boy fell off a large wave that you can surf on as though you were on a ski hill,” Kim Herlev,  Experimentarium’s director of development, told Ekstra Bladet, adding that the attraction had passed health and safety inspections. “That’s why it is so unfortunate that it happened. We have closed the attraction and will only open it again once we know it is safe.”

Herlev apologised for the incident but acknowledged it was the first serious accident at Experimentarium in 20 years.

“I’m really sorry that it happened,” Herlev said.

Today, North Zealand Police said the boy was recovering and had received a minor fracture of the skull.

Police spokesperson Henrik Suhr said that police were investigating the incident and running tests on the attraction, but would not comment before a report is prepared.
