Kongens Nytorv will today host a celebration to mark 300 years since Dansk Teater’s first public theatre performance, which is thought to be the first ever dramatic performance in Danish.

A celebration open to the public will include the opening of an exhibition commemorating the event, the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on Ny Adelgade, performances, and the serving of free champagne, coffee and cinnamon rolls (see below for full itinerary).

More than 100 events
On 23 September 1722, exactly 300 years ago, Ludvig Holberg and René Manong de Montaigu opened their theatre on Lille Grønnegade to present their first performance open to the public.

This is just a hors d’oeuvre as the celebration of the performing arts will continue until Holberg’s birthday on 3 December 2022 with more than 100 events across the country.

Schedule in full

– 10:00: Unveiling of commemorative plaque at Ny Adelgade 10, which is just down the road from Kongens Nytorv, parallel with Strøget. It will include a speech by Dansk Teater chair Mikkel Harder Munck-Hansen and involvement of French ambassador Christophe Parisot. A glass of sparkling white wine will be served to guests. The promo promised champagne, but it’s probably unlikely.

– 10:40: Wreaths will be laid at the Ludvig Holberg statue outside Gamle Scene at Kongens Nytorv, 9. It will include a speech by the Dansk Teater director of drama, Morten Kirkskov, and involve Norwegian ambassador Katja Christina Nordgaard.

– 11:10: Inauguration of anniversary exhibition at Kongens Nytorv. It will include a speech by Dansk Teater chair Mikkel Harder Munck-Hansen and involvement of Mia Nyegaard, the Copenhagen culture mayor. Johanne Louise Schmidt, a star of the recent fourth season of ‘Borgen’, in which she plays the PM, will perform, as will several other actors. Coffee and cake will be served.

– 13:00: Event is expected to end. Probably depends on when they run out of coffee and cake.
