Greenland’s capital has received over a metre of snow in three days

While sunshine and warmer temperatures are slowly finding their way to Denmark, one part of the kingdom is still in the grip of winter.

Greenland’s capital city of Nuuk has been hit by a prolonged snowstorm that has dropped nearly a metre of snow.

Hurricane force winds
Two low pressure systems and a cold snap have helped contribute to the violent winter weather. The snow has fallen nearly uninterrupted since Monday.

The snowfall was greatest yesterday, when 46mm of snow fell in a 24 -hour period. That amount is equal to a month’s typical precipitation in Nuuk.

Winds at Nuuk’s airport were measured yesterday at 35.6 m/s, which is above the threshold for a hurricane.
