Protected animal was beheaded by trespasser

A rare white-tailed eagle has been found shot and mutilated on the small island of Lindholm off the south coast of Zealand.

The Danish Ornithological Society reported the case to the police after carrying out a close examination of the dead animal, a protected bird of prey.

The bird was found with its feet tucked under some boards. It had been shot by a rifle in the wing before getting beheaded.

The small island of Lindholm, which is closed to the public, has a population of three – all workers at DTU Lindholm, a study centre owned by Danmarks Tekniske Universitet.

“Lindholm is not a place you just come over and get access to,” biologist Knud Flensted told Ekstra Bladet.

“If we are lucky enough to find the person who did this, they have violated a number of rules.”

Last year, two white-tailed eagles were found poisoned in Denmark.
