Legends teaming up for Copenhagen Jazz Festival

Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea performing on July 9

Two of the biggest names in jazz, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, are teaming up to headline the 2015 Copenhagen Jazz Festival, it has been revealed.

The two greats – who have won almost 40 Grammy Awards between them – will perform together at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival for the first time on Thursday 9 July 2015 at the DR Concert House.

”Two of the greatest names in jazz history are performing together on the same stage. Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea are each responsible for a number of significant moments in jazz history, and their famous co-operation has roots that date back to the end of the 1970s,” the festival wrote on its Facebook page.

The American pianist duo have been two of the most trailblazing, innovative jazz musicians for more than five decades, first teaming up in the 1970s to record several albums including 'A Evening With Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea'.

Two pillars of success
Hancock, 74, who was part of the Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s, was one of the principal musicians behind the 'post-bop' sound and fusion jazz. He was also an influence in funk and composed the song 'Rockit', the first popular single to feature scratching and turntable techniques.

Corea, 73, who actually replaced Hancock in the Miles Davis Quartet in 1968, was voted the jazz musician of the year in 2013 by Downbeat magazine. His work sets standards and today he is considered one of the major piano forces in the post-John Coltrane era.

Tickets will go on sale tomorrow at 10 am.

The Copenhagen Jazz Festival – which was established in 1979 – will take place at 100 venues in Copenhagen from July 3-12 next summer.
