Ornithologists voted on the most attractive Danish bird species

In an unofficial poll by the ornithological society Dansk Ornitologisk Forening (DOF), the kingfisher has been crowned Denmark’s most beautiful bird.

Some 28,000 followers of the society on Facebook nominated their favourite bird species registered in Denmark as either a breeding bird or a migratory bird to form a shortlist of 12 species. The poll was then opened to all Facebook users and the kingfisher came out on top, with the red kite and waxwing in second and third places, respectively.

Indicator species
Klaus Dichmann, an amateur ornithologist and co-ordinator responsible for registering the kingfisher under the DOF’s Atlas III program, said in a DOF press release that he was pleased with the result. “The kingfisher is a worthy winner because of its unbelievable plumage that uniquely blends of turquoise and cobalt blue colours with the red-brown chest,” he said.

“It’s the indicator species for clean and healthy watercourses in the areas where it lives. As long as we protect our lakes and watercourses, we’ll have the delight of seeing it all over the country, when it swoops from a low-hanging branch after fish.”
