The Copenhagen Theatre Circle’s autumn play is Beyond Therapy, which follows the lives of Bruce and Prudence, two wacky individuals with even wackier therapists. 

Laughter is guaranteed when Bruce’s therapist fails to comprehend his live-in boyfriend and uses Snoopy as a therapy tool, whilst Prudence struggles with a male psychiatrist attempting to hide insecurities of his own. 

The hopeless pair meet for a date so disastrous it makes Take Me Out seem romantic, and the audience is constantly torn between rooting for the pair and cringing at the awkwardness of it all. Similarly, Bruce is torn between Prudence and his boyfriend, promting the immortal line “You, me, occasionally Bob”, which has become the most well-known of the play.    

Described as somewhere between a romcom and a satire, the play has previously run successfully both on and off Broadway and been adapted for a screenplay, although this was panned by playwright Christopher Durang.

The director is Jens Blegaa, who debuted last year with a successful production of The Importance of Being Earnest, which may have positioned him well to direct what critics are calling an “intelligent” and “wickedly funny” play.  

Although some argue that the internet dating trope Durang employs has become clichéd, the recent development of so called ‘therapy culture’ and its presence in the media seems to make the play relevant for all the right reasons.
