Dideriksen defends her world championship junior title

Danish cyclist Amalie Dideriksen sprinted to another golden medal at the junior women’s road cycling world championship today in Ponferrada, Spain.

Following in the tracks of two Brits, Nicole Cooke and Lucy Garner, Dideriksen becomes only the third woman to successfully defended a UCI World Championship junior title.

Dideriksen was positioned perfectly for the final sprint and eased away to finish ahead of Sofia Beggin from Italy and Agnieszka Skalniak from Poland, who took silver and bronze respectively.

Looked good all the way
“[Dideriksen] looked good all the way through. She rode at the front or near the front all the way and covered every move. She deserved to win there, I’d say,” Britain’s junior coach, Matt Winston, told Cycling Weekly.

The junior women’s road race is 72.8 kilometres long and the 18-year-old Dideriksen finished it in 2 hours 2 minutes and 59 seconds.

Dideriksen won her first world championship in Florence, Italy last year, causing a big surprise in the process. This year she started as one of the favourites.
