The world’s largest publisher of travel books, Lonely Planet, has ranked Copenhagen as the most gay-friendly travel destinations in the world.

Lonely Planet praises the Rainbow Square, the oldest gay bar in the world, Centralhjørnet, and the “hip and super-cool district of Vesterbro”.

“One of the most tolerant and open communities in Europe, Copenhagen’s functional yet edgy fashion scene, brilliant array of cocktail bars, excellent range of gay-friendly boutique accommodation and packed calendar of queer events make it the gay-friendliest place on Earth,” Lonely Planet claimed.

Reykjavik in top 10
The ranking also mentioned how Denmark made history in 1989 by becoming the first nation in the world to recognise registered same-sex partnerships.

The Danish capital topped the list ahead of New Zealand (no particular city was mentioned), Toronto (Canada), Palm Springs (USA) and Sitges (Spain).

The top ten was round off by Berlin (Germany), Skiathos and Mykonos (Greece), New York City (USA), Reykjavik (Iceland) and Montevideo (Uruguay).
