The weekend wive all been paying for

Today is a national holiday in Denmark – nobody really knows why.

This Week's dates:

May 16:
Great Prayer Day

Store Bededag is a Christian holiday when Danes take the day off and many stores close. There are especially two traditions linked to the day that are both hundreds of years old and have nothing to do with praying. One custom is to eat warm wheat buns (hveder), thus making it a busy day for bakers. The other is to enjoy springtime in the former ramparts of Christianshavn that are now public parks.

May 17: Norwegian
Constitution Day

Saturday is Grunnlovsdag in Norway and marks the 200th anniversary of Norwegian independence. Why is that important? Because the country Norway was finally freed from in 1814 was Denmark. The day will be celebrated with folk costumes and ice cream in Norway, while it will most likely be mourned by the Danes, who to this day still envy the Norwegians’ rich oil fields, premium salmon and mythical fells.
