Former Eastern Bloc countries getting closer to EU membership

As Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova form closer ties with the European Union, the former Soviet republics can now count on the support of the Danish foreign minister, Martin Lidegaard.

"I'm happy that the EU and Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova have today agreed to work closer together," he said in a press release.

"The deals are a milestone in the three countries' latest history and in the EU's relationship with the countries and the eastern partners."

Future members
The EU signed two deals on Friday – the Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area – that commit the three countries to following EU standards and regulations, a potential big step towards future EU membership.

Denmark supports development activities in Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova through the government's Neighbourhood Program with former Eastern Bloc countries.
