Relative peace during the first week of winter holiday encourages early exit

About 2000 Danish teenagers are headed to Prague next week to party during the winter holidays, but unlike the 4,000 there this week they won’t be seeing uniformed Danish police officers patrolling the mean streets of the Czech capital.

“As it stands right now, things are going much better than they did last year, so it doesn’t seem like there is a need for us next week,” Carsten Andersen, a spokesperson for national police force Rigspolitiet told DR Nyheder.

Last year, under-aged Danish youth on their winter holiday drinking binge were involved in vandalism, stabbings and other violence in Prague.

The Danish embassy in Prague agrees that things are peaceful enough now, but the foreign affairs ministry will maintain extra staff until the end of the winter holidays, and will call the police back if it feels they are needed.

“We can very quickly reinforce the embassy if there is a need for it,” said embassy office head Uffe Wolffhechel to DR Nyheder.
