Søstrene Grene heading to Spain

Danish retailer looking to make waves in the south

Spaniards can now enjoy wandering through a dark Søstrene Grene store in search of the odd and cheap products on offer at the Danish retail chain.

The first shop opened in Madrid on Saturday in one of the Spanish capital’s premier shopping centres. The family-owned business, which enjoyed great success with a branch it opened in Japan in autumn, now plans to expand in even more countries.

"We believe that our concept of low prices will work in Spain,” chain owner Mikkel Grene told Børsen newspaper. “But let’s wait and see.”

Søstrene Grene’s expansion into Spain is years behind that of its principal Danish competitor, Tiger.

Tiger has 36 stores in Spain and has been doing business there since 2008.
