Select Shopping | Get your fix of knob

If you’ve managed to lead a sheltered life in which you’ve never had to properly assess a knob, this is the guide for you. Follow the advice here and you won’t waste time handling a wide selection of knobs – which for many people is their least favourite DIY activity. (Although the pastime can be bearable with the right lubrication – check out cphpost.dk for my early September column on hand lotions, which is a good companion piece it transpires.) It will allow you to concentrate on the dozens of other chores ahead of you.

Anna Black
Anna Black is a Danish-based ceramicist. She creates lovely handmade porcelain collections – including knobs. The advantage is – aside from the fact that the design is beautiful, coming in a wide range of colours and in some cases with flowers painted on the porcelain – that they are designed so you may be able to use them as both handles and hooks in the kitchen. Prices range from 75-80 kr.

Turnstyle design
Turnstyle design is UK-based and designs cabinet-pulled handles in strap leather. They offer varying colours from something they call ‘jazz red’ leather to chestnut leather and with varying metal finishes. It is above average quality and the price is quite affordable. Prices range from 175-195 kr for the small-large strap lædergreb.

Ikea
It would be untrue to say that a trip to Ikea is anything but exhausting. But if you know exactly what you want – in this case, knobs – you should be alright. Especially because they have an alright selection that doesn’t look too inexpensive, but is in fact inexpensive. The Ulvbo collection is only 29kr for two, and the quality seems to be quite good.

Ferm Living and Hay
Illums Boligus has a wide selection of hooks, hangers and knobs. Its Ferm Living diamond hooks in oak or smoked oak are reasonably priced at 400kr for a set of three. But if you prefer in-your-face hooks – like the Hay’s Gym hook that starts at 129kr for the small one, or 229 kr for the large ones – they can deliver on this as well.
Illums Bolighus, Amagertorv 10, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat: 10:00-18:00, Sun 11:00-17:00
