Copenhagen takes home climate honours from London

Capital is given the City Climate Leadership prize and takes top honour in ‘Carbon Measurement and Planning’ at global awards competition

Copenhagen has been internationally recognised and honoured once again, this time at the City Climate Leadership Awards Ceremony which took place September 4-5 in London.

Copenhagen was awarded the City Climate Leadership prize, and was praised for the city's implementation of its ambitious climate plan

"The award shows that it is not only Copenhagen's vision that is acknowledged, but also the ability to carry out that vision," Copenhagen's mayor, Frank Jensen (Socialdemokraterne), said about the award.

"Each time we convert our green plans into action, it changes the everyday lives of those living in Copenhagen," Jensen said. "Whether its conversion to biomass power plants or cooling of buildings with seawater, it increases the overall quality of life in Copenhagen. At the same time, it creates an interest in Danish solutions within the world's major cities, giving Danish businesses better opportunities to sell Danish technology and know-how."

Copenhagen was also honoured in the category of  'Carbon Measurement & Planning' based on its 2025 climate plan. The award recognises Copenhagen for sustainable urban development and its comprehensive CO2 reduction plan, a plan comprised of 65 initiatives divided across four focal areas: energy consumption, energy production, mobility, and city administration.

By 2025, Copenhagen aspires to be the first capital city to be carbon neutral. According to the city, its initiatives have already achieved a 24 percent reduction in CO2 emissions between 2005 and 2012.
